Stormy Weather All-Day School Closings

Notice of school closing will be posted on the Clifton Board of Education Web Site www.clifton.k12.nj.us. This information will be available at approximately 5:30 a.m.

CHANNEL 5 - FOX NETWORK: This year information regarding school closings noting schools in the New York metropolitan area will be available on Channel 5 television, including the Clifton Public Schools. This information will be provided during their regular morning program beginning at approximately 5:30 a.m.

CHANNEL 12 - NJ NEWS NETWORK:  The NJ News Network will also carry notices of school closings including the Clifton Public Schools. Closing information will be displayed at the bottom of the television screen during the morning news broadcast beginning at approximately 5:30 a.m.

Parent Notification System

The Parent Notification System will not be the primary system of distributing information. In order to notify the parents through the notification system effectively, several hours are needed to complete all the telephone calls.

The most effective notification for school closings is Channel 12- NJ News Network, Channel 5 - Fox Network and the district web site.

9126 - Parent Notification System:

The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures and guidelines governing the use of the Parent Notification System.

The Parent Notification System will be used for both crisis and non-crisis situations to notify parents of the Clifton School District relative to important information as deemed necessary by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.  Examples of information that may be communicated through the Parent Notification System are:

1. School Closings

2. School emergencies

3. School events

4. School calendar changes

Time sensitive notifications that require an immediate response

The Parent Notification System for the Clifton School District shall be activated only when approved by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.  The Parent Notification System shall not be used for non-school purposes.


Siren Blast Notification

The siren blast notification system is no longer in use in the City of Clifton. Please use the stormy weather school closing notifications that are listed above. NOTE: The Board of Education, the TV Stations or Police Headquarters MUST NOT BE CALLED for information regarding school closings. These telephone lines must be kept clear for emergencies. Thank you for your cooperation.

Emergency Early School Dismissal

An early dismissal will be implemented in the event weather conditions deteriorate after students are in school. The following school closing schedule will be followed with an announcement of the closings made both by a school telephone chain where possible, and posting on the district web site www.clifton.k12.nj.us beginning at as soon as the early closing is known.  Parents / Guardians should check this site if there is any indication that weather conditions may result in an early school dismissal.

Emergency Early Dismissal - Clifton High School

High School students will be dismissed at 12:08 p.m. when there is an emergency closing due to inclement weather.

Emergency Early Dismissal - Clifton Middle Schools

Middle School Students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. when there is an emergency closing due to inclement weather.

Emergency Early Dismissal - Elementary Schools

Elementary school students in kindergarten and grades 1-5 will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m.The pre-school handicapped classes will be dismissed at the regular dismissal time of 11:30 a.m. Afternoon pre-school handicapped classes will not be held on days of early dismissal.

Emergency Early Dismissal - ESL/Bilingual magnet Program and TAG Pupils Attending School 5

Pupils enrolled in the aforementioned programs will be picked up at each school with the kindergarten pupils (11:15 a.m.) and returned to their regular home based schools where they will integrate into the appropriate grade levels until the 1:00 p.m. dismissal time. Pupils enrolled in the magnet school programs are to be given academic work prior to their return to the home based schools.

Parents who cannot be at home are to be instructed to make arrangements with a neighbor, or other responsible adult, to receive and care for their children in the event of an early dismissal. Children are to be instructed by their parents of the procedure they are to follow in this eventuality. Parent-operated phone chains in place for school closing or days of delayed openings are to be used to advise parents of an early dismissal. Principals are to be informed by the calling party of all cases when parent contact cannot be made.

Students are to be instructed to proceed immediately to their homes or other pre-arranged destination agreed upon with parents who may find that they cannot be at home at the time of early dismissal. Bus students will be retained in school and supervised by staff members until such time as transportation can be provided.

In the event that weather conditions are extremely severe at the time of dismissal, all students will be retained until there is a cessation of hazardous weather conditions.

Previously Scheduled Four-hour Sessions (Noted in the District School Calendar)

Previously Scheduled Clifton High School Dismissal

On dates previously scheduled for four-hour sessions, Clifton High School will be dismissed as follows:    Grades 9-10-11-12 at 12:08 p.m.

Previously Scheduled Clifton Middle Schools Dismissal

On dates previously scheduled for four-hour sessions, the middle schools will be dismissed as follows: Grades 6-7-8 at 12:30 p.m

Previously Scheduled Clifton Elementary Schools Dismissal

On dates previously scheduled for four-hour sessions, the elementary will be dismissed as follows: kindergarten and grades 1-5 at 1:00 p.m.

Delayed Opening Schedule

In the event weather conditions can permit schools to open later than the regular time, a delayed opening schedule will be followed as noted in the chart included in this notice. As with school closings, telephone chains will be attempted where possible and in addition, notification of the delayed opening will be posted on the district web site at www.clifton.k12.nj.us beginning at 5:30 a.m.  All school personnel are expected to attempt to report to their regular opening schedule whenever possible to supervise students who may report prior to the delayed opening time.
