Proper citation format is an integral aspect of the research process. Whether you are writing a paper, creating a PowerPoint presentation, making a brochure in Publisher, or adding content to a wiki or blog on the Web it is necessary to let your readers or viewers know where you found the information to develop and support your ideas. The following guides and links will assist you with appropriate technique for in-text citation and creating a works cited and/or works consulted page in MLA and APA format, which are most commonly used in secondary and advanced educational institutions.

MLA Format "at-a-glance"


Author. “Title of Article.” Book Title. Editor. Edition. Volume.
             Place of Publication: Publisher, Date. Pages. Medium of Publication.

Web Sites

Author. “Title of Article.” Web Site. Editor. Site Publisher or N.p., Date of Publication or
             n.d. Medium of Publication (Web). Date of access. <URL optional>.

Databases, Magazines and Journals

Author. “Article Title.” Journal Title Volume.Issue (Year): pages. Database.
             Medium of Publication. Access date.

Parenthetical or In-Text Citation

If you are using the author’s name in the text only, place the page numbers in parentheses.
“As Horn alluded (97), the....”

The other option is to list the citation at the end of the sentence. In this case you will use the author’s last name followed by the page number (Horn 333).
