Congratulations to the Woodrow Wilson and Clifton High School athletes and unified partners that participated in the 2019 Special Olympics Summer Games this past weekend at The College of NJ in Ewing, NJ.  These young men and women competed among 2500 athletes and unified partners from Summer Games all over the state of New Jersey.  I am super proud to announce our team members brought home many medals: Zayda Murphy, Michael Shimabukuro, Marecello Murphy and Michael Miller 4x100 Unified Relay won a gold medal; Anissa Fraser won a gold medal in the 200 meter; Michael Miller won a bronze medal in the 200 meter and the running long jump; Michael Shimabukuro won a silver medal in the 400 meters and a gold in the running long jump and Xixi Murphy won a gold medal in the 50 meter dash and a bronze in the 100 meters.  Thank you to Stefanie Cramer for volunteering many many hours coaching and chaperoning these athletes throughout our track season. As well as a thank you to the parents for transporting and spending the weekend down in the Ewing NJ.    This event brings together athletes of all abilities, along with over 2,000 volunteers, Special Olympic Officials, as well as Law Enforcement from all over our great state each June to celebrate and compete in track and field, power lifting, swimming, gymnastics, bocce and softball.

On Saturday morning, March 16th at Bowlero in North Brunswick, NJ the Woodrow Wilson Middle SUnified Bowling Champs!chool Unified Bowling Team won the Division 1 Unified Shriver Cup Bowling Tournament. The team of made up of athletes Renzo Amati, Xixi Murphy unified partners Mahki Laws and Marcello Murphy beat out all the other unified middle schools competing in this tournament to take home the first place prize.  These athletes and unified partners have been practicing and perfecting their bowling skills since early October to prepare for the Spring competition season.

Banner CeremonyOn Friday March 8, 2019 Woodrow Wilson Middle School celebrated the revealing of their National Unified Champion School Banner.  Several classes were invited to participate, along with the Woodrow Wilson Boys and Girls Basketball Teams, the Unified Basketball Team, all our Special Olympic Athletes, Unified Parents, parents, friends, administration, and guests from Special Olympics New Jersey.  Global messenger, Bobby Fredericks delivered a speech about being a Special Olympic Athlete and spokesperson for Special Olympics International. Woodrow Wilson alum and Special Olympic athlete Michael Shimabukuro spoke about how Special Olympics changed the direction of his life.  Michael states that the Unified Champion Schools program gave him courage, strength and confidence in himself as well as were he found respect, acceptance and motivation to pursue his dreams. Marcello Murphy a unified partner and seventh grade here at Woodrow Wilson Middle School spoke about being a unified partner and getting to be on the same team as his sister Xixi Murphy with autism.   I wanted to again thank the amazing team of teachers that helped pull this whole thing together, but especially to my two right hand ladies; Stefanie Cramer and Angela Fatsis, thank you too: Kim Stell, Anthony Goglia, Tod Conklin, Anthony Lanzoretti, Rebecca Betzold-Beres, Kevin DobKo and the entire custodila staff, Joan and the main office staff and Mr. Maldonado for checking in all our guests.
