CHS Senior Accepted to US Naval Academy

The Clifton Public School District proudly announces Clifton High School senior Maria Jose Martinez's appointment to the United States Naval Academy Class of 2028. She will report to Annapolis this summer to begin her training as a midshipman in preparation for a career as a naval officer.

The Naval Academy acceptance rate is around 8% annually, making it one of the most selective colleges in the country. Maria Jose received a Letter of Assurance this fall, recognizing her as an exceptional candidate.

While at Clifton High School, Maria Jose challenged herself with an intensive course load while taking on key leadership positions in student government and the National Honor Society. She was a dedicated student-athlete, competing at the varsity level in wrestling, track and field, and cross-country.

"Maria Jose defines what it means to be a leader through service," said Clifton Public School District Superintendent Dr. Danny A. Robertozzi. "She has a clear commitment to excellence and exemplifies the Academy's ideals of duty, honor, and loyalty. I am confident she will represent Clifton Public Schools with dignity and make valuable contributions as both a midshipman and naval officer."

When asked about her motivation to serve, Maria Jose emphasized her deep gratitude for the opportunity to grow up in the United States. "I knew I wanted to serve my country, so being in the military was a big priority in my future planning," Maria noted. She looks forward to studying electrical engineering and submarine technology.

Maria Jose will be the first in her family to attend a service academy or serve in the armed forces. She credits her family and several CHS teachers and coaches for supporting her Naval Academy dreams.  "My mom sacrificed everything so my sister and I could have a better life. I've received an education, countless opportunities, and safety that I wouldn't have had the privilege to experience somewhere else," said Martinez.
